Sasha Khokha

KQED Public Radio
Host, The California Report Magazine
Oakland, CA
Sasha Khokha is the host of  The California Report Magazine, KQED’s weekly statewide storytelling show,  Sasha takes listeners on sound-rich radio excursions to meet the people and visit the places that make the Golden State unique, from cattle ranching moms to  homeless college students and young mariachis. The show’s “Golden State Plate” series features the origin stories of iconic dishes with roots in California.  As The California Report’s Central Valley Bureau Chief for nearly a dozen years, Sasha brought the lives and concerns of rural Californians (and the rural California immigrant community) to listeners around the state. Her Emmy-winning documentary "Hunger in the Valley of Plenty," exposed how farmworkers in the nation's richest farm belt often can't afford to purchase the produce they harvest. Sasha’s reporting also helped exposed the hidden price immigrant women farmworkers and janitors may pay to keep their jobs: sexual assault at work — and helped change California law with regard to sexual harassment. She’s been nominated for three national Emmys, won a national PRNDI award for investigative reporting, as well as multiple prizes from the Radio Television News Directors Association and the Society for Professional Journalists. Her work often draws on her South Asian roots – her film about girls adopted from Calcutta to Swedish-Lutheran Minnesota, which was nominated for a national Emmy. Sasha  began her radio career in waterproof overalls, filing stories about the salmon fishery at Raven Radio in Sitka, AK. She's a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and Brown University.
